2nd GAP Workshop:
Bone Structure and Fracture
TCD, April 25th-26th 2024

The second GAP workshop took place at Trinity College Dublin and focused on the structural and mechanical behavior of bone. Blending classroom teaching with experiential learning, the workshop guided doctoral candidates through the full continuum from bone anatomy and composition to fracture mechanics and failure analysis.

The first day included campus and laboratory visits, alongside lectures on bone structure and biomechanical function delivered in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons. On the second day, participants engaged in theoretical and practical sessions in the Anatomy Room, focusing also on fracture toughness testing, gaining direct experience with experimental protocols and data interpretation. Led by experts in biomechanics and fracture mechanics, the workshop highlighted how structural insights translate into engineering design principles relevant to scaffolds and biomaterials.
